Cleaning under the toilet rim is one of the most overlooked bathroom cleaning tasks, largely because it's hidden from view and easy to forget during routine cleaning. The underside of the rim can trap bacteria, mineral deposits, limescale, and waste residue that gradually build up with every flush. When left untreated, this can lead to stains, unpleasant smells, bacterial growth, and even reduced flush performance as water flow becomes restricted. Fortunately, addressing these hard-to-reach deposits doesn't have to be difficult.

CLR Brands Calcium, Lime, and Rust will work to dissolve stubborn limescale and mineral buildup, making it the perfect solution for restoring cleanliness. By incorporating CLR into your regular bathroom maintenance routine, you can help keep your toilet cleaner, fresher, and operating at its best.

What Causes Stains and Buildup Under the Toilet Rim?

Not all buildup under the toilet rim is the same. In most cases it’s either bacterial growth or mineral deposits. Dark spots, black streaks, or slimy residue are often signs of bacteria, mold, or mildew developing in the damp environment beneath the rim. In contrast, chalky white, beige, or crusty deposits typically indicate limescale and calcium buildup caused by hard water. Over time, mineral buildup can clog the rim jets that distribute water around the bowl during flushing.

This issue is often even more noticeable in toilets that aren't used regularly, such as those in guest bathrooms, basements, or vacation homes. When water sits stagnant for extended periods, bacteria has more opportunities to develop, while existing mineral deposits continue to harden and restrict water flow.

Standard toilet bowl cleaners often do little to address these hidden problem areas. While they may clean visible surfaces inside the bowl, they frequently fail to penetrate clogged rim jets or dissolve the stubborn mineral deposits lurking beneath the rim. That’s where we come in.

CLR's powerful descaling formula is designed to dissolve tough mineral accumulations, breaking down limescale, calcium, and other mineral deposits that will help restore proper water flow and improve overall toilet performance.

How to Clean Under the Toilet Rim: Step-by-Step

Before you begin cleaning, it's helpful to inspect the underside of the toilet rim to identify what type of buildup you're dealing with. Because the rim jets are hidden from view, a small hand mirror can make this task much easier. Hold the mirror beneath the rim and use a flashlight if needed to examine the jet holes and surrounding surfaces.

Steps to clean:

  1. Put on cleaning gloves
  2. Turn off the water supply to the toilet
  3. Flush the water from bowl
  4. Spray CLR on the underside of the toilet rim or pour 1 cup of CLR into bowl
  5. Wait 2 minutes
  6. Scrub the bowl with a toilet brush for 2 minutes or until the soil is loosened
  7. Turn the water supply back on
  8. Flush

Once cleaning is complete, flush the toilet one final time to thoroughly rinse the bowl, underside of the rim, and jet openings.
