Start with an empty sink and disposal. Do not turn on the disposal yet.
For best results, use once a week or as needed.

Start with the splash guard, the rubber flaps over the disposal opening trap the most residue and are the most common source of odor. Remove or lift the guard and scrub both sides with a long-handled brush. Then drop one pod into the disposal with the unit off and a thin stream of cold water running off to the side of the sink. Turn the disposal on, let the foam retreat back into the unit, then rinse. For a full walkthrough, see How to Clean a Garbage Disposal.
Yes, pods formulated specifically for garbage disposals are effective for regular maintenance cleaning. The foaming action reaches the interior of the unit in a way that liquid poured down the drain typically doesn't, since most of a liquid cleaner passes through too quickly to do much. Pods work best when used consistently, weekly use prevents buildup from reaching the point where it causes persistent odor or drainage issues.
No. Dishwasher pods and dishwasher cleaners are formulated to dissolve food residue off dishes in a closed, high-heat environment, not to clean the interior surfaces of a disposal unit. They won't produce the foaming action needed to reach the blades, walls, and drain opening, and some contain ingredients that can irritate the rubber components inside the disposal over time. A pod designed specifically for disposals, is a different product with a different formulation.
Once a week is the general recommendation, especially in kitchens that handle a lot of food waste. Weekly cleaning prevents buildup from compounding and helps keep odors from developing.
